Nagadeepa Kovil

Hop on a boat ride towards the great Nagadeepa Kovil where many devotees flock mostly in the month of June. Nagadeepa is dedicated to the Naga Tribe of Sri Lanka, which is the aboriginal inhabitants of Western and Northern Ceylon!!!

Similarly the Nagadeepa Vihara is one of the most sacred temples visited by Buddhists that was built by two Naga kings, Chulodara and Mahodara, at the site where Lord Buddha during his second visit to the country on a Bak Maha Amawaka Poya Day, five years after attaining Enlightenment, intervened and mediated in settling a dispute over the possession of gem-studded throne. The precious throne was offered to the Lord Buddha, was returned to the Naga Kings and was later enshrined in this Rajayathana Stupa.
